Nata nel 1973 ad Ashford, nel Kent, dal 2005 ad oggi ha preso parte a molti progetti e ha collaborato con Beta Band, Martina Topley-Bird, Mad Professor, Marc Almond, Marianne Faithfull e David Holmes.Il suo primo lavoro solista, Notes on: Love, somiglia a un'autostrada abbandonata in mezzo al nulla, una cattedrale diroccata popolata dai fantasmi di Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith e Jeff Buckley. Nel 2012 la cantautrice ha inciso il suo nuovo album, Notes on: Death, le cui registrazioni si sono svolte “basandosi sull’elettricità della luna piena”. Molte le influenze e le citazioni: da William Blake a Elizabeth I, da Josh T. Pearson a My Brightest Diamond, da Syd Barrett a Siouxsie Sioux. Notes on: Death è diviso in due parti, "black" e "white", ognuna delle quale bilancia l’altra. Un vero e proprio viaggio dantesco che dalla discesa agli inferi porta la cantautrice alla rinascita. La particolarità di questo concept-album è la vastità musicale espressa. Folk, blues, sperimentazione strumentale. Sorprende la facilità e la credibilità con cui Petra Jean ci trasporta dalle atmosfere noir in stile Kurt Weill del primo disco alle trame ed ai cori angelici della seconda parte. Un lavoro ambizioso e perfettamente riuscito, un’artista che si distacca in modo deciso dalla iper-sessualizzazione dell’immagine femminile in ambito musicale.
 

If Notes on Love (2005), her first solo album, is a philosophical study of love, with Notes on: Death (2012), Petra Jean Phillipson transports us from the noir atmospheres of Kurt Weill to angelic plots and choruses, depicting a Dantean journey which from the descent into hell leads to rebirth. Many the influences and citations: from William Blake to Elizabeth I, from Josh T. Pearson to My Brightest Diamond, from Syd Barrett to Siouxsie Sioux. The artist, who appears on stage in Victorian dress, firmly detaches herself from the hyper-sexualisation of the female image typical of the music scene, inspired by the legend Lilith (in contrast to Eva). She performs in duet with guitarist (and husband) Matthew N. Hopwood. Born in 1973 in Ashford, Kent, from 2005 to today Phillipson has been part of many projects collaborating with Beta Band, Martina Topley-Bord, Mad Professor, Marc Almond, David Holmes and Marianne Faithfull.
