SOCIAL THEATER PRACTICES

PDTS SOCIAL THEATER PRACTICES

Lenz Foundation and AUSL of Parma have been collaborating since 2000 for integrated projects aimed at individual rehabilitation and community well-being. From these experiences, with the aim of promoting artistic paths of high aesthetic quality created with people with disabilities and psychiatric diagnoses, Lenz's theatrical training courses are born.

Necessary condition for a profound renewal of the language of contemporary theatre, it is the reunification between aesthetic experience and living community in the historical present: the theater conceived as a dynamic space, in which forms of artistic and communicative experimentation can be carried out. A theater understood as the physics of the imagination, volumetrics of creativity, chemistry of social bodies, differentiated and exalted in the subjectivity of their aesthetic actions. For its poetic-aesthetic contents and for the methods of inclusion in training processes, this multi-year project presents itself as a highly innovative model of integration of sensitive people into the world of artistic work, in the full exaltation of their talents and vocations.

Social Theater Practices is a theatrical awareness project that is divided into different workshop paths aimed at people with intellectual disabilities, physical and sensorial, to former long-term psychiatric patients, and to people normally excluded from artistic processes. Contemporary theater feels the need to merge with the social being in a condition of fragility maturing in a natural process, vulnerability, weakness, suffering, in search of a new artistic resurrection.

The aspect that differentiates this research practice is the primacy of the dramaturgical design over the nuclear nature of relative improvisation. In Lenz's poetics the form of spectacular outcomes is the profound intertwining of the root, the original nucleus of the text and its revelation through the words and gestures of the actor.

Iphigenia in Aulis
Laboratory aimed at people belonging to the Pathological Addictions Service of the Parma Local Health Authority

Valentina Barbarini, associated artist protagonist of the sixth Parentela 2023 of the three-year Lenz project NDT.02 Bestiary_Female Animal, In the 2023 led the Social Theater Practices workshop – in co-teaching with the performer Monica Barone and aimed at people belonging to the Pathological Addictions Service of the Parma Local Health Authority. The lab, centered on the myth of IPHIGENIA IN AULIDE, led to a public performative outcome at Lenz Teatro il 30 and the 31 maggio.

Synopsis of the laboratory

Continuing the study of the material of Iphigenia in Aulis means taking up an investigation into the multiple possibilities that hide along an apparently marked road. Investigating the passive acceptance of a higher order from different perspectives, of a male power taken for granted, the rebellion, or the choice of an individual and hybrid path that hides behind the most immediate appearances of the narrative. A hybrid path in which each is placed, in full legitimacy, at a different point. In this sense, laboratory practice is also a path, an itinerary towards authorizing oneself to have
a voice."

The soldiers
Workshop aimed at young people belonging to the Casa della Salute for Children and Adolescents in Parma

The soldiers by Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz, tragic and dissonant fresco on the humiliation of the feeling of love due to loneliness and lack of communication, it is a tangle of conflicts and conspiracies in a context characterized by desire and the impossibility of channeling it in ways that lead to self-realization.

In the text, the dramaturgy intersects quotes from Brechtian lyrics and diaries and situations taken from Godard's cinema. The state of solitude and impossible communication of the little lie of the theater want to evoke that state of infinite vulnerability and at the same time of apparent indifference, of icy emotional heat, of staged abandonment to one's own destruction actually aimed at seeking a possibility of sharing and salvation.

Lenz was an inspirational figure in the 1985 of the birth of the artistic formation Lenz Rifrazioni (Foundation today). The German playwright who lived at the end of the eighteenth century expresses a strongly anti-rhetorical vision of the crisis in the West, anticipating major themes such as antimilitarism with pre-Marxist sensitivity, social injustice, violence against women, the criticism of dominant male power.

Synopsis

Throughout history, the development of the ideal of human perfection has drawn a boundary line that has led to the marginalization and exclusion of bodies and minds that do not conform to the principles dictated by man and have become apparently insurmountable institutions..

There are subjects who have nothing to fear in the public space because they are representatives, sometimes unaware, of the dominant model, that is, the reference model that constitutes the norm.

On the other hand, Instead, There are opposing subjects, minority groups that fuel the image of being out of place, and they pay the price for their deviation from the norm.

In the 1776 Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz recognizes and criminalizes this privilege to the point of challenging the morality of his contemporaries through a work, The soldiers, strongly anti-militarist and anti-patriarchal.

Today, putting the revolutionary power of a voice out of the chorus of the 18th century into dialogue with the stumbling postures of adolescents in search of their own center means renegotiating the distribution of spaces and promoting access to the common space for all subjects as equivalent beings, free to speak, act and participate.

ARISTO PROJECT

2015 THE FURIOUS (1)   #1 THE ESCAPE #2 THE ISLAND # THE MAN #4 THE PALACE
2016 THE FURIOUS (2)   #5 THE ILLUSION #6 MADNESS #7 DEATH #8 THE MOON

PERFORMATIVE LABORATORY PROJECT AIMED AT USERS OF THE MENTAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT - AUSL PARMA.
Lenz's research on the archetypes of the Italian language continues, after Manzoni a backward turn towards Ludovico Ariosto and his Furioso, among the greatest poems of the Renaissance. The book of heroism and madness, scattered in rhizomes throughout the work, Orlando's madness excessive and paradoxical, exaggerated, which explodes in the invincible pure and perfect knight, sane and principled.
But madness is the poetic-linguistic structure- aesthetics of the work itself, lost like reason inside “the container that contained its sense, found by Astolfo on the Moon and driven back into the body of the rightful owner" as Italo Calvino writes in the presentation of his Furioso. The loss of self, some things, of reality, parallel stories, of the plot, of magic, of desire, of the spatial explosion of narrative contexts, the most blind and sudden bestiality that draws absolutely new poetic pictures for chivalrous stereotypes: this is the nervous system of Orlando furioso.
A monumental octave imagoturgy that outlines an epochal passage towards a different world, more overlapping, more complicated. A century later Cervantes, with his furious Don Quixote, will give the final blow to chivalric literature, ma, always quoting Calvino, “among the few books that are saved, when the curate and the barber set fire to the library that drove the hidalgo of La Mancha to madness, there is the Furioso ..."
The work is structured in eight performative and visual episodes installed and directed by Maria Federica Maestri and Francesco Pititto – four in 2015 and four in 2016.
Interpreters, together with the core of historical actors from Lenz, the “sensitive” actors, mentally and intellectually disabled, who fully matured a unique research path in Europe for intensity and expressive results, impose, true to Artaud's word, an irrational and 'furious' vision of contemporary theatre.
Lenz's theatrical language is based on an extreme and radical fidelity to the word of the text. In the search for the heroic state of the actor, theater takes shape in the oscillation between weakness and strength, vulnerability and power of the speaking body. The extreme state of feeling, the passion that moves and pushes towards death, the tragic killing of the hero, the condition of dreams and reality, the mystery of the human condition, they are generated by the act of speaking, the full body of the voice. From this need for fusion comes the development of a permanent research project aimed at deepening contemporary theatrical expressiveness and the meaning of the artistic experience in the encounter between disabled actors and able-bodied actors.; a profound and lasting fusion between the Lenzian poetic universe and the creative wisdom of disabled actors, united in the search for an expressive and sentimental rebirth of the theatre.

REMS SPECIAL PROJECT
2015 + 2016 MACBETH

Il 31 March 2015 the Emilia-Romagna Region has started a pilot experience at national level for the transfer of patients previously detained in OPG to new reception facilities (Judicial Psychiatric Hospitals) Italians. In particular, one of the first Residences for the Execution of the Security Measure has become operational in Mezzani in the province of Parma (REMS).
It is to these sensitive guests, in collaboration with the Integrated Mental Health - Pathological Addictions Department of the AUSL of Parma, that Lenz intends to contact for collaboration in imagoturgical creation. Their faces will become the visual transfer (social, emotional) for the spectators of Macbeth and the question of madness and the visions of Lady Macbeth and her husband will become living matter, violent act remembered and reworked, hallucination refocused.

PDTSM 2014 SOCIAL THEATER PRACTICES MUSIC

LEARNING AND PRACTICE OF ELECTROACUSTIC MUSICAL LANGUAGE IN CONTEMPORARY SOUND CREATION. FROM THE VOICE TO THE SOUND DESIGN.
TRAINING AND AWARENESS PROJECT ABOUT ELECTROACUSTIC MUSICAL LANGUAGE AIMED AT BLIND OR VISION-impaired PEOPLE.

The PDTS Musica professional training course 2014 It was mainly aimed at blind and visually impaired people.
The identification of the target students was carried out in close collaboration with the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired of Parma, project partners, is SILD – Disabled Work Placement Service of the Province of Parma. The laboratory was created thanks to the support of the Department of Training and Active Labor Policies of the Province of Parma. The training project has foreseen, beyond 2 specialized teachers, 1 specialized technician e 1 professional assistant.

In theatrical/musical practice aimed at social issues and the involvement of sensitive people in artistic creation, in the methodologies implemented to prepare the ideal conditions for correct physical and intellectual participation, the aspect of sound production has always been assigned to the conductors or directors of the workshops.
Lenz Rifrazioni's proposal has overturned this assumption. The high innovation of the project is summed up in the use of current technologies, in the possibility of sharing this knowledge with people who have greater difficulty coming into contact with the new languages used in the creative/artistic field, in the construction of a new training methodology that places the sensitive subject in a perspective of self-determination. The type of digital musical work that was taught is the one normally applied in the entertainment sectors, entertainment and all the professional studios that deal with post-production in the fields of advertising, of social promotion, of communication in general.

In a first phase, the investigation focused on the sounds produced directly by the students involved: parole, vocal effects or noises arising from the hands or joints, any production of sound elements without the aid of mechanical means, acoustic or extracorporeal: a corpus of sound that comes exclusively from the student's body.
The timbral heights of this sound were analysed, expressive colors, the power and any other sound/musical element that can represent the object of dramaturgical and compositional transformation.
The second phase consisted of the digital recording of the selected sounds and their critical listening, with the related proposals for rhythmic or timbral changes – or any other formal transformation – according to a vocal and musical dramaturgy project. This produced a first outline of original text composed of words and sounds, a subject for each student on which to intervene with subsequent modifications, amplifications or segmentations.
In this further phase, with the use of the computer and according to the precise instructions of the course leader, the student was taught the use of specific programs for a new processing path (create complex sounds starting from a large amount of simple sounds) in particular by acting on the time and frequency of the sample sounds.

The path of the 8 students, driven starting in April 2014 by teachers Maria Federica Maestri, artistic director of Lenz Rifrazioni, and by Andrea Azzali, composer and electronic musician and historical collaborator of artistic training, it ended with a live performance in which the fundamental principle of the course was realized: the possibility, by a group of “non-musicians”, to make music, to create music by working on sound as an entity and not as an "organization" of notes.

EXIT PDTS Music in the form of a concert open to the public was held on 12 June 2014 in the post-industrial spaces of Lenz Teatro and was divided into three parts: the first, acousmatic, lasting approximately 20', involved listening to songs pre-recorded by the students and created during the course. In the second part the live performance developed: with the help of four lap-tops and four sound generators, the sound materials digitized by the students – sounds, parole, verbal articulations, music tracks – have been assembled, through the mixing carried out by Azzali, on a basic electronic score. The course participants were asked to improvise on it, giving life to a real jam session, to a live concert based on mutual listening and real-time intervention on the sound. In conclusion, the students' live vocal elaborations on electroacoustic recordings previously created by them were presented to the public.
